In 1985, Michael Jordan was banned from the NBA for wearing the Air Jordan 1 "Black/Red" and was charged $5,000 per game because white was one of the official team colors of the Chicago Bulls. As a marketing strategy, Nike ran a "lockout" campaign around the sneaker to launch and promote the Air Jordan line. The sneaker was replicated in 1994, 2011, 2013 and 2016. the 2011 model featured an "X" on the heel, paying homage to the "banned" moniker.
